What is influenza?
Influenza is an infection caused by infection with the influenza virus. In addition to fever, headache, joint pain, muscle pain, and fatigue, flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, cough, and runny nose may also occur. Flu is more likely to cause fever than the common cold, and the symptoms can be severe.
It is characterized by its strong infectious power. In Japan, it typically starts to spread from December to around March each year, but the beginning and peak of the season can vary from year to year. The most common types of flu are A and B. Because different types can spread at the same time, some people may experience two flu seasons in the same winter.
Those with pre-existing conditions such as infants and the elderly, heart and lung diseases, diabetes, and kidney diseases are more susceptible to worsening, so caution is required.
In such cases, seek medical attention.

Frequently asked questions
Q. What is the difference between the flu and the common cold?
A. Both are viral infections, but influenza tends to cause more severe symptoms than the common cold. It can also cause similar symptoms to the common cold, making it difficult to distinguish based on symptoms alone. Therefore, if you suspect it, you should get tested.
Q. Do antibiotics work?
A. Antibiotics do not work against viruses. They may be used when suspected bacterial infections such as pneumonia are present.
Q. When can I start going to school and work?
A. The period of suspension from school attendance is determined by the regulations for the implementation of the School Health Safety Act. For handling at the workplace, please check the regulations of your workplace. We also issue diagnosis certificates to be submitted to schools and workplaces.
