There are two types of influenza vaccinations: voluntary and routine.
About Routine Immunizations
Routine vaccination is a routine influenza vaccination based on the Immunization Law and is available to the following persons
1. 65 years of age or older
2. 60-64 years of age with a heart, urinary or respiratory organ dysfunction that severely limits their daily life (generally equivalent to Level 1 of the disability scale)
3. 60-64 years of age with impaired immune function caused by human immunodeficiency virus, which makes daily life almost impossible (generally equivalent to Level 1 of disability grade).
Routine vaccination is available at local medical institutions and family doctors. Available medical institutions and costs vary by municipality.
In Meguro-ku, where our clinic is located, the vaccination is either free or 2,500 yen, depending on the age of the child. Vaccinations are available at designated medical institutions in the 23 wards of Tokyo. You do not necessarily have to go to a medical institution in Meguro Ward, but you must go to a designated medical institution in each ward.
Some people are not eligible for the routine influenza vaccination. The following persons are not appropriate to receive the vaccination or require caution when receiving the vaccination.
1. those presenting with obvious fever
2. those who are clearly suffering from a serious acute illness
3. those who have a known history of anaphylaxis caused by components of the influenza vaccination solution.
4. those who have had a fever within 2 days of receiving a routine influenza vaccination or who have had symptoms of suspected allergy, such as a generalized rash.
Other persons with conditions that make it inappropriate to administer vaccinations.
(a) Those with underlying diseases such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, liver disease, blood disease, developmental disorder, etc.
(b) Those with a history of convulsions in the past.
(c) Those who have been diagnosed with immunodeficiency in the past or those who have a close relative with congenital immunodeficiency.
(d) Persons who may be allergic to the components of the inoculating solution to be inoculated.
If this applies to you, please note that receiving the vaccination is conversely a risk.
If you are unsure whether you fall under this category or not, please feel free to contact us.
About voluntary vaccinations.
Influenza vaccination is a voluntary vaccination for those who are not eligible for the regular vaccination above, at the discretion of the individual and his/her family.

At what age should the flu shot be given? Should they be vaccinated once or twice?
We have explained the cost subsidies regarding influenza vaccination for children, and these are available from 6 months of age.
Influenza vaccination is available from 6 months of age, and it is recommended to start vaccination after 6 months to prevent serious illness.
For children between the ages of 6 months and 12 years, two doses are recommended because the immune system is considered to be weak and one dose is not sufficient to acquire immunity.
If you are considering getting a flu shot, please contact the Ikejiri-Ohashi Sera Clinic.
