Should I get a flu shot?

What is influenza?

Our hospital also started influenza vaccination on October 1.

Influenza, as it is widely known, is an infectious disease caused by the influenza virus. It causes fever, headache, joint pain, and common cold symptoms. It is often referred to as flu in English and is often handled as a type of common cold, although the fever may be higher and the symptoms more severe than the common cold.

Characterized by its highly infectious nature, infants, the elderly, and those with underlying medical conditions are especially vulnerable to becoming seriously ill and require caution. In fact, many deaths due to influenza occur every year in Japan.

[When is the flu season?

We have all experienced at least once that school was cancelled due to the influenza epidemic in winter. The number of infected people begins to increase around the end of November each year, and often increases until around January or February. Such an epidemic that occurs every year around winter is called seasonal influenza. On the other hand, a new type of influenza is one that differs from seasonal influenza in the nature of the virus and spreads in a 10- to 40-year cycle. A new influenza pandemic broke out in Japan in 2009.

[Types of influenza].

Influenza viruses are broadly classified into types A, B, and C. The most prevalent types are A and B. Type A influenza viruses are divided into 144 subtypes. Type A influenza viruses are mainly type A and type B. Type A influenza viruses are divided into 144 subtypes, of which only two are prevalent in humans: Hong Kong type (A/H3N2) and Soviet type (A/H1N1). The virus undergoes a series of smaller mutations.

Type B influenza is divided into two types, Yamagata and Victorian, which are further subdivided into two types.

Because the Hong Kong, Soviet, and B types of influenza A can be prevalent at the same time of year, some people can be infected with influenza twice in the same winter.

[Should I get a flu shot?

Many people have been infected with influenza at one time or another, but some people are not vaccinated but have never been infected. For those who have been vaccinated against influenza, the incidence of illness has been reduced by 601 TP3T compared to those who have not been vaccinated against influenza.

Although it cannot be guaranteed, the most significant effect of influenza vaccination is to prevent "severe illness". For this reason, infants, the elderly, and people with underlying medical conditions are especially encouraged to receive influenza vaccinations. The main underlying diseases are as follows

Cardiovascular (e.g., heart failure), respiratory (e.g., asthma and chronic lung disease), hematological, liver, kidney, metabolic, diabetic, and neurological diseases
