Other thyroid diseases (other than Graves' disease and Hashimoto's disease)
-There are two types of thyroid abnormalities: hormonal abnormalities and lumps.
As thyroid disease,Graves' diseaseやHashimoto's thyroiditisis well known, but there are a variety of other thyroid diseases.
These diseases are not uncommon and are often found during physical examinations, physical blood tests, and ultrasound examinations.
Thyroid diseases can be divided into two main categories
- Diseases caused by abnormal thyroid hormones
- Diseases caused by thyroid nodules (lumps)
Each of these typical diseases is described below.
Diseases caused by abnormal thyroid hormones
Thyroid hormones are important hormones that regulate body metabolism, body temperature, and heart function.
An imbalance of these hormones can cause a variety of symptoms.
painless thyroiditis
This is caused by inflammation of the thyroid gland and temporary leakage of hormones stored in the thyroid gland into the bloodstream.
Main Features
No neck pain.
. Temporarily elevated thyroid hormones.
In many cases, the situation improves spontaneously within a few months.
Palpitations, weight loss, sweating, and other symptoms may occur.
subacute thyroiditis
This is a disease that causes inflammation of the thyroid gland, triggered by a viral infection or other factors.
Main Symptoms
Neck pain
Heat generation
Pulsation
Strong sluggishness
Thyroid hormones are temporarily elevated but improve with appropriate treatment.
functional thyroid nodule
This is a condition in which a portion of the thyroid lump begins to autonomously produce thyroid hormones.
as a result
Pulsation
Weight loss
Increased sweating
Symptoms such as the following may appear.
Diagnosis is made through blood tests and imaging studies, and treatment is provided as needed.
Diseases caused by thyroid nodules (lumps)
thyroid noduleis a lump that forms in part of the thyroid gland.
It is relatively common in adults and is often first detected on ultrasound examination during physical examinations.
There are many different causes of nodules.
cyst
Fluid has accumulated in the nodule.
Most are benign and are managed with observation.
Benign tumors (e.g., adenomas)
It is a benign lump formed by cell proliferation.
In most cases, no immediate treatment is required, but periodic evaluation is important.
adenomatous nodule
It is a relatively common benign nodule that may be seen as a change associated with aging.
Thyroid cancer (malignant tumor)
Some thyroid nodules are rare.thyroid cancermay be included.
Most thyroid cancers progress slowly and can be expected to have a favorable course if properly diagnosed and treated.
On the other hand, there are rare types that progress more rapidly, so accurate evaluation is important.
Examination of the thyroid gland when abnormalities are noted
If an abnormality of the thyroid gland is noted during a physical examination or other medical examination, it is important to accurately evaluate the nature of the abnormality.
The main inspections are as follows
Blood test (measurement of thyroid hormones)
Ultrasonography (evaluation of the shape and size of the lump)
Cytology (confirm benign/malignant if necessary)
By these inspections,
Is it OK to follow-up?
Do I need additional testing?
Do you need treatment?
to make appropriate judgments.
Many thyroid diseases can be safely controlled with proper testing and management.
